Optimum Gold Whey Standard Whey Reviews

Tastes great and mixes easily with a spoon. A lot of protein without all the fat and cholesterol.

This product seems to be worth its weight in gold. I take it three times a day and mostly love the fact that it has Glutamine in it s my muscles stay nicely fed. Wheather mixed with water or milk it still taste good. Although the name"double rich choc." doesn't quite suit it. It's a bit weak in the choc. flavor dept. but is overall the best protein Ive taken for the price--- No more GNC proteins, Id rather get more for my $$$$.

This Protein unlike most others actually dissolves into your shakes. much nicer than others

Q: Are there any side effects?

A: There are 2 cases where on would want to avoid Gold Standard Whey due to side effect(s).

1) If are allergic to whey. Please note bovine milk allergy which includes both whey and casein proteins only affects

0.1–0.5% of the adult population

2) If you are lactose intolerant there is a small amount of lactose in Gold Standard whey in which case you can choose a whey protein isolate where the lactose is filtered out.

For more info on whey we have a video covering it in depth. Whey Protein Isolate vs. Concentrate vs. Hydrolysate //www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4jknqocpjQ

Q: When should I use it?

A: Gold Standard whey can be used anytime you need protein. Since whey protein is easily digested and provides a great, BCAA rich amino acid profile many use it around workouts (shortly before and/or after).

A: First and foremost whey protein is one of the best proteins available for building muscle. It is the very rich in muscle building BCAAs (

24%). In addition to the great amino acid profile whey is also anti-carcinogenic, immune enhancing, and anti-microbial.

Q: How do I mix it? What can I mix it with?

A: There are a few ways you can mix Optimum Nutrition 100% Gold Standard Whey and you can mix it in water, almond milk, or milk depending upon your preference in terms of taste, texture, and desired calorie content (milk and almond milk add calories). Also it can be mixed in a smoothie w/ your favorite fruit and/or vegetable. How much liquid you use is based on your texture preference. It can be mixed with a spoon in a glass or a shaker cup.

Q: How much should I take?

A: For individuals looking to build/maintain muscle shoot for 0.85-1.25g of protein per pound of goal bodyweight (1.87-2.75g protein/kg/goal bodyweight). Please note this includes protein intake from other sources in addition to ON Gold Standard Whey. For instance if one’s goal bodyweight is 175 lbs (80kg) and one is getting 120g from other sources then one would want 55g from whey protein to reach aforementioned goals.

Q: How many scoops per bottle?

A: This varies based on the size and slightly by flavor. On average the scoops (servings) per bottles are as follows and have 24g of protein

- 2 lbs - 29 Servings (scoops)

- 5 lbs - 77 Servings (scoops)

- 10 lbs - 154 Servings (scoops)

Q: How many calories per serving?

A: This varies slightly by flavor. Please find the calorie content for each flavor of Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey Protein powder below. Also please note not all of these flavors are available in the 10 lbs size.

  • Banana Cream 120 calories
  • Caramel Toffee Fudge 130 calories
  • Chocolate 120 calories
  • Chocolate Malt 120 calories
  • Chocolate 120 Mint calories
  • Cookies & Cream 120 calories
  • Extreme Milk Chocolate 130 calories
  • French Vanilla Crème 130 calories
  • Mocha Cappuccino 130 calories
  • Rocky Road 120 calories
  • Strawberry 110 calories
  • Tropical Punch 120 calories
  • Vanilla 120 calories

Q: Will it make me fat?

A: Whether or not one gains weight is based on total caloric intake relative to activity level. If your caloric intake exceeds the number calories burned then you gain weight. All of that being said a protein powder w/ very little carbohydrates and fat is not likely to make one fat. This is for 2 reasons first protein has the highest Thermic Effect of Food (TEF) amongst the three macronutrients. This means that after digestion one only gets

75% of the calories from protein or 3/4 of calories per gram. Second protein is also the most filling macronutrient so the odds if it being the big contributor to a caloric surplus is minimal.

Q: Will it help me gain weight?

A: Yes however it is generally not thought of as a weight gainer due it being low in carbohydrates and fat. That being said if your caloric intake from other sources is high this can certainly be part of a weight gaining diet.

Q: What is the best flavor?

A: Based on sales data the chocolate is the best seller. For those looking to make fruit smoothies we recommend vanilla.

A: According to Optimum Nutrition the only flavor that does contain gluten is the Gold Standard Cookies n' Cream flavor as the cookie pieces contain gluten. In regards to other flavors
they state that they do not add gluten to Gold Standard Whey. That being said they cannot
say with 100% certainty that all of the other flavors are gluten-free. Optimum Nutrition uses
the same equipment to make products with and without gluten. Please note Optimum Nutrition cleans the equipment in-between runs however trace amounts of gluten may remain.

Q: Is it Lactose free?

A: ON Gold Standard whey is not 100% lactose free, however it is low in lactose. Also ON adds lactase to it which is the enzyme that breaks down lactose.

Q: Does it have caffeine?

A: Gold Standard 100% Whey Protein is caffeine free.

Q: Is it from plants or animals?

A: The protein in Gold Standard is whey protein. Whey protein is one of the two proteins in mammalian milk. In this case it is from bovine milk. Therefore if one is a vegan ON Gold Standard Whey is not suitable as it is an animal sourced product. This is a good supplement for Lacto-vegetarians.

Q: Does it contain any artificial ingredients/sweeteners/flavors?

A: There are two versions of ON Gold Standard Whey. The Natural 100% Whey Gold Standard version contains no artificial sweeteners, flavors, or colors. It is sweetened with evaporated cane juice powder, natural flavors, and stevia (rebaudioside A). The original version is sweetened w/ natural & artificial flavors, and acesulfame potassium.

Q: Does it contain Aspartame?

Q: Is this Vegan/Vegetarian friendly?

A: No animals are slaughtered to get whey protein as it is from bovine milk. It is an animal based protein so it is not in line with a vegan diet. For vegetarians it depends whether or not one is a lacto-vegetarian or not.

Q: Can this help with weight loss?

A: In the context of a caloric deficit Gold Standard 100% Whey Protein can help with weight loss. In fact research demonstrates that nutrient dense; protein rich diets are superior for bone health, muscle growth, maintaining muscle tissue, and fat loss. In addition to being essential protein is the most satiating macronutrient with the highest thermic effect so it makes dieting easier and more effective.

Q: How many servings should I take per day?

A: Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey Protein can be used to supplement one’s protein needs. The more protein on gets in from other sources the less servings one will need from Gold Standard Whey. Also one’s bodyweight will determine how much protein they need per day.

Q: Does it come with a scooper?

A: Yes there is a scooper in each container.

Q: Can women take this or is it just for men?

A: ON Gold Standard whey is not gender specific so both men and women can use it.

Side Effects

Allergen Information: contains milk and soy (lecithin) ingredients.

I have tried many different proteins from different companies and I like this one the most. ON gives you the best bang for your buck and these days I think thats what we are all looking for. I got the chocolate flavor and it tastes great and mixes pretty easy (I use a shaker with the little ball in it). I have not tried any other flavor but I have heard they are good as well. 24 grams of protein per scoop is great, and the scoops are not huge either. I'm looking forward to buying this stuff again!
